Capturing the Devil by Kerri Maniscalco

This week's book is called "Capturing the Devil" and before going any further it is the fourth book in the series with the same characters. I didn't have many problems not reading the first three books, but you should probably read them in order. I know I will be getting the other three books to see what happens.

this book mentions small things from the previous books, like the main characters investigating the murders done by Jack the Ripper, and a mysterious carnival. These events are crucial to understanding the story, but the characters give enough context, you could read this book as a stand alone.

Getting down to it, Audrey Rose is the 1880's equivalent of a forensic scientist and her soon to be husband is a Sherlock Holmes kind of detective. They have come to New York to investigate a series of gruesome murders. Their investigation leads them out of new York and to Chicago during the World's Fair where a large number of women have disappeared and are horribly murdered.

Audrey Rose and her fiancee Thomas are on the trail of H. H. Holmes thought to be America's first serial killer, who built the infamous Murder Castle hotel. The whole book is dark and Gothic. Audrey Rose is intelligent decisive and witty. the story has so many twists and always had something new to throw at the characters. I am recommending this book with the advice that you read them in the intended order.
