Fool's Assassin

Review of Fool’s Assassin by Robin Hobb

I received this book free in exchange for an honest review

Fool’s Assassin is set in a semi-magical kingdom, with all the complexity of “Game of Thrones”. Fitzchivalry Farseer is a royal bastard who was trained to be the royal assassin. in his youth he almost died in a magical accident. Using that to his advantage he fakes his own death. Leaving court and his life as an assassin behind Fitzchivalry marries his childhood love and retires to a country estate to live out his life in peace under a false name.

His life went on peacefully for decades until pale strangers start showing up trying to deliver messages from an old friend simply called “the Fool”. Fitzchivalry hasn’t seen his friend in decades and has presumed him dead. The fool is in trouble and helping him would pull Fitzchivalry back into a life of violence and danger that he swore he was done with.

Fitzchivalry is a very deep and conflicting character. He is a very well written character and is very interesting. The world that Robin Hobb has created is dark and full of intrigue which pulls you in as the reader.

In the beginning I found that the book was a bit slow pacing wise, but it did pick up towards the middle. All the characters are so different and unique that you want to learn more about them. While there is magic in the kingdom, I don’t feel like the magic in the book isn’t excessive and its use is practical and effective in moving the plot forward.

I do think that it is a good book and do recommend it, I just warn readers that the book is a slow builder and is the first book in the series, so there is much more to look forward to in the next few books.
