Review of Foundryside by Robert Jackson Bennett

Foundryside is yet another Comic Con acquisition that has found a permanent place on my bookshelf. Foundryside is written by Robert Jackson Bennett, the same author who wrote "City Of Stairs" and this book is the beginning of a new series with the next book coming out next year.

Foundryside is a world controlled by warring merchant houses. Each house is basically its own kingdom with a founding family trying to maintain control over trade. The wealthy heads of the foundrys strive to master the amazing and dangerous technology of scriving, which uses coded commands to imbue objects with sentience.

All of that means very little to the main character. Stancia is a theif who is hired to steal an artifact of untold power that could change Scriving both for the better or worse. Every scriver in the city is after Stancia who has to make hard decisions concerning the artifact and her ragtag team of friends.

I cannot deny that Foundryside was pretty awesome. It blended sci-fi and fantasy together perfectly. The technology of Foundryside is part machines and part magic that feels so perfect. The characters are also so well written and beautifully complex. I am eagerly awaiting the next book in the series and i suggest that you read the first book before there are many more.
